Shugendo
Experience

Shugendo(Yamabushi)Experience

Embraced by the mountains, you turn your gaze inward —
the first step on the path of prayer.

Shugendō is an ancient Japanese spiritual practice carried out in the natural world.

It arose from a belief that elements of nature—such as mountains and water—are sacred,
and developed into a practice in which practitioners enter the mountains
and seek unity with the Buddha.

Shugendō at Miidera has deep connections with the UNESCO World Heritage site Kumano Kodo,
and even today, monks continue to walk the path of prayer on Mount Nagara.

In this experience, you will deepen your understanding through explanations given by a monk,
and don the traditional garments of a Shugendō practitioner
to engage in a meditative practice that allows you to face your inner self.
