Sencha-do Experience at the National Treasure Kangakuin
A fragrant moment of tranquility — Miidera Temple’s Tea Offering
The setting for this experience is Kangakuin, a designated National Treasure.
Once a center of learning, it was known as “Hall of Great Scholars.”
The room’s wall paintings, resplendent yet serene in dignity,
are so celebrated that their beauty has even been recreated at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.
The “Mii Koryū Sencha-dō” school of sencha, handed down at Miidera Temple, traces its origins back to the Edo period.
It is said that the elder Tsuboiken of Miidera drew water from the “Sacred Spring of Miidera Temple”
and offered a cup of tea to visiting worshippers.
The movements of this sencha ceremony are remarkably gentle,
captivating viewers with their warmth as they blend with the soft sound of flowing hot water.
